Dirty was the closest Sonic Youth came to breaking into the mainstream. Some Sonic Youth albums can be a little bit uneven, but Dirty really doesn't have a weak moment. The Sonic Youth album for the uninitiated.

one of the most trite and boring albums of the 90's, dookie belongs nowhere on this list. this was and continues to be a joke/pop band only interested in the most bland bubblegum pop.

After the death of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl found himself an out for his considerable talents through his new band the Foo Fighters. Grohl is said to have composed and played everything on this album all by himself, and so began the phenomenal career of the Foo Fighters.

After the massive success of Nevermind, Kurt Cobain's bitterness with fame and fortune is plain to see on In Utero. With a less produced sound than Nevermind, In Utero arguably has far greater depth than Nevermind.

Much derided, it would be fair to say Jagged Little Pill hasn't left a hugely enduring mark on the rock landscqape. It's massive success did spawn a number of female singer/songwriter copycats however, and there is certainly no shortage of catchy rock tracks on this album.

Like Freddie Mercury reincarnated, Robbie Williams threw off his boy band past and took his place in rock's history books. The hit song Angel was a massive worldwide hit, with the notable exception of the USA.

For rock as storytelling, you can't go past Nick cave's Murder Ballads. Featuring beautiful duets with Kylie Minogue and PJ Harvey, Murder Ballads manages to combine exquisite pop rock with dark brooding songs about serial killers.

Most pick Ok Computer as Radiohead's finest, but as a traditional rock album, The Bends is a masterpiece. With every single track a work of genius, this album is even more extraordinary when you consider it came of the back of their massive hit Creep, and their very average first album Pablo Honey.

With this album, and the very Beatle-esque Wonderwall, Oasis scaled the heights of Britpop once and for all. Anthemic, poppy stadium rock at its very best.
